Woman stabs mother-in-law to death in Niger

Police in Niger State have arrested a 36-year-old woman, Fatima Sani, for allegedly stabbing her 70-year-old mother-in-law, Aisha Umaru to death.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Wasiu Abiodun, in a press statement on Tuesday said the woman blamed her mother-in-law for her recent divorce.

“The said Fatima, who had been divorced, left Gobirawa village to Tozon Daji in Mashegu local government on 24th April, 2020, and secretly entered the mother in-law’s room where she stabbed her to death for allegedly instigating her son, Sani Umaru, to divorce her,” says the statement.

She will be arraigned in court on completion of investigation, the Police spokesperson said.

The Police in Niger have also killed three suspected kidnappers, in a gun battle.

The PPRO, Mr. Abiodon said in the press statement the three were members of a seven-man gang.

Abiodun said, “On 04/2020, about 0130hrs, information was received that a seven man gang of suspected kidnappers from Goyi village, Gwagwalada, FCT invaded Tufa village via Gawu Babangida, Gurara local government area. A joint police/vigilante team, led by DPO Gawu Babangida, mobilised to the scene and engaged the hoodlums in a fierce gun battle, during which three of the hoodlums, namely; Abdulqadir Abubakar ‘m’ aged 20, Nuhu Shuaibu ‘m’, 22, of Goyi village Gwagwalada FCT and Musa Maisaje ‘m’, 20, of Dobi Kaida FCT, were arrested with gunshot wounds.

“The suspects were taken to Umar Musa Memorial Hospital Sabon Wuse for medical attention but were later confirmed dead by the doctor.”

One AK-47 rifle with erased breach number, one empty magazine, one pump action rifle and Army camouflage uniform were recovered from the suspects, said the Police spokesperson.

Efforts to arrest the fleeing gang members were in progress, he said.
