Terrorism: Mailafiya’s allegations of government sponsorship deserve probe – Northern Governors

Nigeria’s Northern Governors Forum says it is concerned about allegations made by former Central Bank Deputy Governor, Dr. Obadiah Mailafiya that politicians including a State Governor are sponsoring terrorism in the country.
The Forum, its Chairman, Simon Lalong said has been working with the Federal Government, security agencies, communities, civil societies, traditional and religious leaders as well as development partners to defeat terrorism, banditry and other crimes in the region, and finds the allegations by Dr. Mailafiya “very weighty”, deserving further “investigation”.
“We as Northern Governors have met several times to discuss insecurity in the Northern Region and the nation at large.
“We did not only condemn the activities of terrorist groups such as Boko Haram, bandits, armed robbers, kidnappers and other criminals, but also engaged the President and all heads of security agencies in finding solutions to the problem.
“To now say that one of our members is leading Boko Haram in the Nigeria is a serious allegation that cannot be swept under the carpet. We demand immediate and thorough investigation,” said Lalong in a press statement through his Press Director, Makut Macham.
The NGF boss urged Dr. Mailafiya and other citizens with useful information on the activities of criminals and terrorist groups to avail such to government and security agencies for proper action.
He however maintained that the Forum “does not, and will not support the activities of any criminal group.”
The Governors and their families are also not spared as recently witnessed in the attack on the convoy of Governor Babagana Zullum of Borno State, the statement says.
