Special military Task Force operatives in Central Nigeria’s Plateau State have been fingered in an attack on a couple last Sunday.
A couple identified as Mr. Sunday Audu Evi, 45 and his wife Siye, 32 were ambushed by gunmen at about 6:55pm local time near a military checkpoint in Hukke village of Bassa Local Government Area.
Locals say they overheard military operatives discussing about a “mission” by 7pm. Minutes after the attack, a man believed to be a soldier was seen with AK47 rifle near the corpses shortly, hurrying toward parked military motorbikes and van.
“The vehicle moved towards the ECWA Secondary School and another (military o came from the forest to join the same vehicle.
We attempted to interrogate him but he fired shots in the air to clear his way into the vehicle,” said an eyewitness.
According to a youth leader, efforts to get peacekeepers at the nearby military checkpoint to respond during the attack were resisted.
“They stopped us from going to the scene and refused to go themselves,” said a youth leader.
The villagers on Monday protested, demanding the withdrawal of soldiers in the locality.
Officials had yet to comment as of the time of filing this report
