Jos Nigeria: A former Nigerian international basketball player, Felix Akiga has funded the construction of roads in Plateau and Kaduna States.
The roads, mainly campus streets in University of Jos and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria total 4 kilometers.
The ABU road measuring 3.5kms has long been completed and commissioned, Akiga told journalists in Jos, on Friday during the launch of the Uni-Jos road.
“This is our own way of giving back to society,” Akiga said.
The donation is one of many by the Chairman, Choice Leisure Limited, owners of Royal Choice Inn.
Last year, he offered N10m cash prizes to students of the University of Benin for the annual Prof. Faraday Orumwense basketball tournament.
He equally awarded international scholarships to 15 local basketball players, sponsored tournaments and established a basketball clinic in Benue.
“I could dish these interventions to people in cash but it might not do much as in human and capital development,” Akiga said.
Akiga’s donations, the Nigerian Minister for Special Duties, Sen. George Akume said were a relief to government and citizens alike.
Represented by the country’s Executive Secretary, Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Prof. Elias Bogoro, the Minister appealed for more of such donations for community advancement.
