“Organized groups, Parents now into trafficking” – NGF

Nigerian Northern Governors Forum, Simon Lalong says human trafficking has taken multiple dimensions in the country, with many “individuals and organised groups” participating to make gain.
Trafficking according to Lalong is fueled by poverty, ignorance and greed with some parents “abdicating” their responsibilities, putting their children in “harm’s way” to make money.
To fight the menace, a multi-sectoral collaboration is needed, said the NGF Chairman and Governor of Plateau State, in Abuja when visited by the Director General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim.
Governor Lalong assured the NAPTIP of his support and partnership to succeed.
Mr. Sulaiman-Ibrahim told the Governor that NAPTIP is opening up new partnerships with institutions and donors to fight trafficking.
The Agency according to her has commenced consultations with State governments and other stakeholders to preventive trafficking.
“This is the best way to go because the situation where victims are traumatised and negatively affected before rehabilitation is reactive and does not go far.
“It is cheaper and more profitable for human trafficking rings to be identified and disrupted while the victims are protected rather than allowed to undergo harrowing experiences with some of them losing their lives,” said the NAPTIP DG.
