Experts in family planning and reproductive health say Nigeria’s population is growing faster than its resources.

This if not checked could result in the total collapse of the country’s economy, Mr. Josiah Mutihir, Chairman, Voice for Family Planning and Reproductive Health Centre, Plateau State said, Friday.

Insurgency and other violent crimes eminent in the acclaimed African giant are partly a result of available resources not meeting its growing population, said Mr. Mutihir, a reproductive health physician.

“Ideally, population should only grow according to resources but in developing countries, it’s the reverse and this poses a great challenge to socioeconomic development,” he said at a meeting with media professionals in Jos, the capital of Plateau State.

The family planning professional warned against political and sociocultural practices encouraging overpopulation.

He said, “Aside from voting for politicians with our numbers (large population), I don’t know what else we get from having large families that we can’t cater for.

“We seek to outnumber one another for religious and cultural supremacy but what other than enimity do we get?”

The “Breakfast Meeting” of media professionals with officials of Voice for Family Planning and Reproductive Health Centre, Plateau State was organized to create partnerships for wide population control advocacy.
