Officials have adopted new technologies to transform agriculture in Nigeria, a move that might turn farming into specialized business for skilled professionals.

Prof. Garba Sharubutu, the Executive Secretary of the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), said, Thursday, that entrepreneurship centers will be created in local colleges and universities, to train interested professionals – retired employees, graduates, others who want to take up trades in agriculture.

“We are trying to support the Soil Research Council to have a soil map in Nigeria. We are also trying to support Seed Council to have seed map so you can know when to clear your farm, plant and harvest. And we are trying to develop a Technology that will enable you to solve any agriculture related issue without having to go to the agro or veterinary clinic.

“With this technology, you can simply pluck a leave from your crop farm, scan it with your phone canera and the system will be able to read the disease information and provide solution,” Sharubutu, a Professor of Infectious Diseases and veterinary legislation said at the third edition of Plateau Social Media Awards in Jos.

The system will provide three months “intensive training” in the “rudiments of agriculture”, he said. Participants will have practical knowledge of the trade, to better manage farms and finances.

“Of all professions in Nigeria, agriculture appears to be the only one that does not require Professional skill and that is limiting our potential. That is why people collect Federal loans and ate unable to pay because they lack the requisite skills,” said the Veterinarian.

Nigeria according to him could earn more from agricultural revenue than oil, by “Simplify farming through agric-specific training and funding. “The future of agriculture in this country is in modernization. Let us create the centers that will transfer the skills and we will be better for it,” he said.
