NDLEA nabs 481.097kg drugs in Borno

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Borno State Command in 2019 arrested 462 drug suspects, officials say.
Eleven of the suspects have been convicted while 64 cases are
pending before the federal high court Maiduguri, Mr. Joseph Icha, the NDLEA Borno State Commander says.
Within the year, a total of 481.097kg (nearly half a drum) of assorted illicit substances were seized and withdrawn from circulation, Icha said in a press statement, Monday.
The substances, the Commander listed to include 327.204 kg of Cannabis Sativa, 448.7g of Cocaine, 250.72 grammes of Heroin and 100.637kgs of psychotropic substances.
According to Icha, 262 drug users were counselled within the year while 14 persons admitted and successfully rehabilitated.
The command he said has deployed intelligence led approaches
in handling illicit supply of hard
drugs.
At the same time, it is deploying evidence based preventive strategies in drug demand reduction
efforts.
“The command has conducted drug abuse preventive education to schools and tertiary institutions in the state
and has conducted sensitization campaigns to several IDP (internally displaced persons) camps in the state
within the year under review,” he said.
