Police in Niger State have arrested a 35year-old, Mr. Umaru Jibrin for allegedly killing the Chief Imam of Enagi town in Edati area of Niger State, Mr. Attahiru Alhassan.
Umaru stabbed the cleric and fled to a nearby village before he was arrested, Police Public Relation Officer, DSP Wasiu Abiodun said, Tuesday.
The suspect told Journalists at the Police Headquarters in Minna that he caught the Imam sleeping with his wife when he attacked him.
“When I saw him on top of my wife, I asked, ‘Imam why must you do this to me? Aisha my wife what are you looking for?”‘ said Umaru.
He however said he left the scene to avoid overreactions but was called back by the Imam for truce.
According to him, “I left the scene immediately and rushed to my brother’s house Abubakar Abdulrahman and informed him of what I saw. Shortly after, the Imam sent for me for peace talks that he didn’t want the story out and in the course of the discussion, an argument brokeout and I seized an iron rod in his hand and stabbed him on the neck with it.”
Umaru will soon be charged to court, Police say. If found guilty, he could face capital punishment under Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
