Covid-19: Plateau hits 70 cases, shuts Eid praying grounds

Officials in Plateau State say open-air prayers usually observed by Muslims during Eid-el-Ftr Sallah celebration will not be allowed this year.

This is in sequel to rising COVID-19 cases in the State, said the State’s Commissioner of Information, Mr. Dan Manjang.

The State currently has 70 confirmed cases from just a “mild” case on April 22, 2020.

After a security council meeting presided over by the State Governor on Thursday, the State resolved to shut all Eid praying grounds in line with “existing ban on all large public gatherings and the directive of  the President-General, Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs His Eminence, Sultan Mohammed Abubakar that all muslims should suspend congregational Eid Prayers and pray at home,” Manjang said.

All recreational centres in the State, the Commissioner said shall remain closed.                             

According to him, prayers in mosques should have not more than 50 persons, observe regular hand washing, use of sanitizers and social distancing.

Commercial Tricycle (Keke Napep) operations are also banned for Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th, May 2020, the days of the festivities.
